Van Zandt County Crime Stoppers is hosting a fund-raising golf tournament June 8 at the Van Zandt Country Club in Canton, and there is still time for players to sign up.

The tournament, sponsored by Ford of Canton, features a large number of impressive prizes for players. With a hole-in-one, a player could win a Ford Focus from Murrey Motors of Wills Point. Among the other prizes are a golf bag, Cleveland putters, a driver, rounds of golf at nearby courses, cash, and gift certificates.  There are more than 60 door prizes, donated by individuals and businesses from all over the area..

Set up as a four-man scramble with A/B/C/D players in gross and net flights, the tournament kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. It ends with a barbecue lunch, catered by Danny's BBQ of Athens, and the awarding of prizes.

Individuals and teams can sign up at Van Zandt Country Club or call 903-848-0163.  Entry deadline is June 1 and the entry fee is $70 per player.

"We thought a golf tournament would be an excellent way for us to generate additional operating funds for the year," said Andy Flowers, president of Van Zandt County Crime Stoppers. "We have a lot of money available to give out rewards for anonymous crime tips, but our operating budget is a bit tighter. We're hoping a successful tournament will give us more breathing room."

Crime Stoppers, which takes anonymous tips at 903-567-STOP or 903-567-7867, uses its operating funds primarily to maintaining the 24-hour phone line, with special operators. The group's rewards of up to $1,000 are given for tips that lead to the arrest of a criminal offender who has either just committed a crime or is wanted on a warrant. More information about Crime Stoppers is available or on Facebook.
