From the Office of U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement today on the Obama Administration’s deal with Iran.

“In 2008, then-Senator Obama said:
‘We cannot allow Iran to get a nuclear weapon.  It would be a game-changer in the region. Not only would it threaten Israel, our strongest ally in the region and one of our strongest allies in the world, but it would also create a possibility of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists.  And so it's unacceptable.  And I will do everything that's required to prevent it.’
“Unfortunately, as is all too often the case with this president, what he says is not matched by what he does.  Easing sanctions and recognizing the regime’s nuclear enrichment program, as this interim deal does, is dangerous; it does not stop Iran’s movement towards a nuclear weapon.
“The United States must continue to stand beside our friends and allies in doing whatever it takes to ensure that Iran is not able to gain a nuclear weapons capability.  That is why I co-sponsored and voted in favor of a bill that passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming bipartisan support to broaden economic sanctions and tighten enforcement of existing sanctions on the Iranian regime.  These stringent sanctions have given us leverage in our dealings with Iran because they are having an impact.  Now is not the time to relieve the pressure.
“I fear that this dangerous agreement was born of a woeful misapplication of the old Russian proverb made famous by President Reagan in his dealings with the former Soviet Union: ‘trust but verify.’  The Iranian regime’s dishonesty with regards to its nuclear program leaves it wholly undeserving of the trust that the administration seems prepared to place in it. This agreement is all too heavy on the trust and light on the verification.”
