Both victims involved in an explosion of an oil tank storage facility north of Van on HWY 110 reamin at the Parkland Memorial Hospital Burn Unit in Dallas.
Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Chuck Allen says the fire was finally extinguished at 9 a.m. Tuesday. All fire departments have left the scene. The names of the victims are still being withheld until the family has been notified.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas Railroad Commission reaming on scene to ensure clean up. Allen says the fire ended up completely destroying three 400 barrel storage vessels. Three other 400-barrel storage vessels were damaged in the fire. “There was a breach in the tank dike which resulted in a small amount of salt water and raw crude oil making its way into a small creek,” Allen said.
The creek has been boomed and the effects are extremely limited as a result of quick thinking and response by fire department.
The operator of the storage facility is Three Folks Operating Company, LLC out of Flatonia Texas.
It is reported that both individuals were smoking on top of the storage tanks, when one of the tanks exploded. One of the victims, a 24-year-old female is on life supports, and the other a 24 year old male has burns to face, chest and arms.
