A Fruitvale home was destroyed in a fire Friday morning.

According to Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Chuck Allen, Fruitvale, Grand Saline, Edgewood, and South Van Zandt Fire Departments were dispatched to the 11,000 block of US Highway 80 around 10 a.m. on a reported structure fire.  Upon arrival, responders found a single story brick home with fire coming through the roof. The homeowner, identified as Lewis Harris, was located outside and was unharmed. Harris was home at the time of the fire and was able to get himself and his dogs out. Lewis lived alone in the home. The house was a total loss. Lewis did have insurance and was assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but is still under investigation by the Fire Marshal.

Van Zandt County Constable Precinct 3 and 1 were on scene along with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department, who assisted with traffic control.  The fire was brought under control about 11:30am.
