The Hawkins School District is closed again today after smoke threatens the safety of local students.

Dan Rose, the school’s superintendent said the school made the decision just before 6 a.m. to close the school again, since the Environmental Protection Agency had not yet given their approval on the air quality in the city. Rose said he expected that approval to come sometime today which would allow the district to resume classes tomorrow.

The smoke descended on Hawkins early Tuesday morning after a large tire recycling facility caught fire. Firefighters from several departments responded to the blaze, but the tires proved difficult to manage.

The facility had been abandoned nearly a year ago after the owner reportedly did not properly register the site. The fire is being treated as suspicious.
