Canton, Texas can now brag that they produce the smartest kids in KMOO Country. 

The 2009 Wireless to Go Valedictorian Challenge took place Thursday afternoon, in downtown Mineola in the historic select theatre.  9 valedictorians from all over KMOO country gathered to compete for cash and prizes in a game show type atmosphere that broadcast live on 99.9 fm and all over the world on kmoo.com.

The Contestants competed in a trivia type game show and were given four lifelines to use along the way.  The Peoples' Telephone "60 Seconds on the Internet", the Watkins Insurance "Ask your Mentor", the John's Tire 50/50 and the KMOO Redo. 

Let's meet the contestants:
Contestant #1 - Emily Sterling from Canton was the winner!  She is the daughter of Steven and Cecilia Sterling and plans to attend Texas A & M University to major in English.  Her mentor for the game was her dad - Steven Sterling.  She won a road trip for 8 to Galveston island, including tickets to Schlitterbahn, hotel rooms for 2 nights and gas money.  She also won an exclusive party for 500 people at Splash Kingdom Water Park in Canton.

Contestant #6 - Henry Sanders III from Quitman finished 2nd in the challenge.  He is the son of Henry Sanders and he plans to attend Texas A&M University to study biomedical engineering.  His mentor for the game was his counselor, Dana Hamrick.  Henry won a new Dell Laptop Computer donated by People's Telephone in Quitman.

Contestant #3 - Corey Ward from Yantis finished 3rd.  He is the son of Cinda Calvert.  Corey plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and will be studying Mathematics and Computer Science.  His mentor was Becky Barnes, his math teacher.  Corey won a new set of tires donated by John's Tire and Auto in Mineola.

Contestant #2 - Adam Cook from Winnsboro finished 4th.  He is the son of David & Krystal Cook and plans to attend Austin College in Sherman to major in chemistry (pre-med).  His mentor for the game was Mr. David Pinnell, his English teach and ready writing coach.  Adam won a new pair of sunglasses from East Texas Optical in Quitman, a $100 gift certificate from Bulldog Computers in Mineola and gift certificates from Paradise Tanning in Quitman.

Contestant #5 - Laura Ragsdale from Hawkins finished 5th.  She is the daughter of Jennifer McClain and plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler to major in Communications.  Her mentor for the game was Erika Prater - her journalism and English teacher.  She won a $100 day at the spa from It's About Time Salon in Mineola.

Contestant #9 - J.T. Wilkinson from Alba Golden High School finished 6th.  He is the son of James & Shanna Wilkinson and plans to attend Texas A&M Commerce to study Chemistry.  His mentor for the game was Mr. Walter Ragsdale, his math teacher.  He won a $100 shopping spree from Circle B Western Wear in Canton.

Contestant #8 - Lockie Breeding from Harmony finished 7th.  She is the daughter is Tonya Horn.  She plans to attend Texas A&M University to major in agricultural science.  She would like to be an AG teacher someday.  Her mentor for the game was her superintendent, Jed Whitaker.  She won a $100 shopping spree from J & D Western Wear in Winnsboro.

Contestant #7 - Revae Rivera from Mineola finished 8th.  She is the daughter of Carol and Aida Rivera and plans to attend Texas A&M University to become a veterinarian.  She brought her principal, Ricky Stephens to be her mentor for the game.  She won a shopping spree from All of Us in Quitman.

Contestant #4 - Britni Williamson from Lindale finished 9th.  She is the daughter of Marcy & Wayne Williamson and plans to attend Texas A&M University to major in engineering.  Her mentor for the game was her friend, Rebecca Wortman.  She won a customized blanket and duffel bag donated by Texas Tees in Mineola and gift certificates from Paradise Tanning in Quitman.

All contestants also won prizes donated by Wireless to Go in Lindale.  Other sponsors donating prizes included:

So, for the next year Canton can boast that they produce the "smartest kids" in all of KMOO country.  So, all of our other schools get ready and start studying!  Next year is already shaping up to be quite exciting.  Who will dethrone Canton for the bragging rights to 2010?  Tune in to see.......well, maybe to hear!  Only right here on KMOO!
